I recently spent time at VON’s North Bay, Muskoka, Sarina, Hamilton, Toronto and Peterborough sites. I don’t get to spend as much time as I used to as “Sherri the Nurse” so this week was really great. I realized both how much I remember and how much I forget. I also realized how thankful I am that I work with such competent, client-centered and professional nursing colleagues.
I spent time listening to nurses banter like sisters about the system and problem solve clinical issues. I learned new wound care protocols and the difference between nausea and vomiting. I refreshed my understanding of dialysis. I had a robust professional practice discussion with a team about medication management in our homecare context. I learned how nurses in adult day programs save people from falling through the cracks of our health care system. I took pictures of and hugged nurses who range from new grad to those with over 25 years of VON service. I was also lucky enough to spend time with many other people who make this place work – including a volunteer I want to be just like when I grow up and.…… I ate more baked goods than I should have.
We know this, but it is great to be reminded that every single day that our staff does great things for our clients and we do those great things because we have great people. We are creating exceptional client experiences every single day and we have so much to be proud of.
Thank you to those sites I visited for allowing me to be there and for planning such wonderful activities for me to be a part of.

HI Judith
Please remember that VON is not just about nursing. VON also have great staff that work in your CSS, Human Resources, Marketing and other departments which are not nurses but are other professionals. They should not be forgotten, but I believe they are also a big part of the agency. Thank you and please don’t forget about them!
